How to set up a printable dinosaur escape room at home

A practical parent guide to turning a personalized PDF into a birthday adventure for kids ages 8–10.

A printable escape room is a paper game you prepare at home. Children solve puzzles, follow a clue trail and work toward a finale. You do not need to lock a door or buy real padlocks. ScamperCub supplies a personalized PDF; an adult prints it, prepares the envelopes and supervises the game.

Start with the players and the space you have

ScamperCub is designed for 3–12 players ages 8–10. Choose the birthday explorer's age and first name, then select places you actually have at home. For a smaller group, one team follows a single trail. From six players, you can choose two teams: each follows its own clues before both teams combine their Vault Tiles for the final challenge.

Choose an area where an adult can supervise. Keep the activity away from stairs, hot appliances, breakable objects and places children would need to climb. Tell the players which rooms and objects are out of bounds. Nothing needs to be locked, and doors and exits should stay accessible.

Gather your printing and setup supplies

  • Your downloaded PDF and a printer with US Letter paper.
  • Envelopes and tape for organizing and placing the clues.
  • Scissors for the envelope-label page, used by an adult.
  • Pencils for the players and the parent guides kept separately.

The game can be printed in color or black and white. Before printing the entire file, check your printer settings and preview a page so text, labels and puzzle borders are not cut off. The PDF uses US Letter paper, a format used in both the US and Canada. Printing and physical supplies are your responsibility; no kit is shipped.

Read the parent pages before hiding any clues

Read the Parent Quick Start and Game Master Guide first. Keep the Hint & Solution Guide with you rather than in the players' pile. Use the generated Envelope Plan and Hiding Checklist as your source of truth: your chosen hiding places and team setup determine the trail.

Lay out the labeled envelopes on a table, put the matching sheets inside and check them against the plan before taking them to their hiding places. Do one team at a time when preparing two teams. Keep each team's pages together so a clue from one trail does not accidentally send the other team to the wrong place.

Understand the difference between stops and puzzles

Every ScamperCub Adventure Length uses six stops per team. Classic has six puzzles per team; the longer options add puzzles inside the same envelopes. Choosing a longer adventure does not require finding more hiding spots. Follow the Envelope Plan for what to hand to the children, what to keep and which four envelopes per team to hide.

There is no single playtime that fits every group. Reading confidence, group size and how much help you provide all affect the pace. Leave room in your party schedule for instructions, the adventure and the finale rather than promising the children a fixed finishing time.

Introduce the mission and use hints gently

Use the read-aloud story and mission cards to begin. Explain that the group should solve a clue before moving on, keep its papers together and ask the adult if anything is confusing. In a two-team game, both teams are needed for the Great Vault; the aim is cooperation rather than declaring one team the loser.

If players get stuck, start by asking what they have already noticed. Give a small hint from the included guide, allow them to try it, then offer more help if needed. Keep answers out of sight. You can adjust how much support you give without changing the printed puzzle or revealing the entire solution.

Plan the purchase and download before party day

Buying ScamperCub is a one-time purchase, with no subscription and no ScamperCub account or sign-in. Checkout asks for payment and receipt information. Prices are in USD for both US and Canadian customers; any applicable tax and your payment provider's currency conversion affect the final amount.

After verified payment, the PDF is generated on your order page. Use the same browser to access the order, save your PDF while download access is available and print ahead of the party. If generation or downloading fails, use the order page's retry option or contact support instead of purchasing again. Read the delivery and access terms before ordering.
